Somnus is a new Sleep Aid Device from TensCare.
It uses Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) to aid falling asleep, reduce waking during the night and improve overall sleep quality.
The device generates very small electrical pulses which stimulate the cranial nerves via wearable ear clip electrodes.
This non-invasive neuromodulation technique has evidence in helping those who suffer from Insomnia, as well as anxiety and depression.

Why we sleep
• During sleep, your body is working to support healthy brain function and maintain your physical health.
In children and teens, sleep also helps support growth and development.
• Most adults require between seven and nine hours.
• An insufficient amount of sleep can lead to serious repercussions.
Some studies have shown sleep deprivation leaves people vulnerable to attention lapses, reduced cognition, delayed reactions, and mood shifts.
• Improving sleep is biggest health ambition for a quarter (26%) of UK adults.

What is insomnia?
Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty with falling asleep, staying asleep, or both.
• Initial (sleep onset) insomnia: This means you have trouble falling asleep.
• Middle (maintenance) insomnia: This form makes you wake up in the middle of the night but you fall back asleep.
It’s the most common form, affecting almost two-thirds of people with insomnia.
• Late (early waking) insomnia: This form means you wake up too early in the morning and don’t fall back asleep.

Acute insomnia
Acute insomnia describes sleep difficulties that last for a few days or weeks, but not longer than three months.
Short-term insomnia can often be traced to an external cause or life stressor like divorce, the death of a loved one, or a major illness.
If acute insomnia persists over multiple months, it becomes classified as chronic insomnia.

Chronic insomnia
Chronic insomnia is when a person experiences sleeping difficulties and related daytime symptoms, like sleepiness and attention issues, at least three days per week for longer than three months.
It is estimated that about 10% to 15% of people have chronic insomnia.
People with chronic insomnia commonly feel distressed about their inability to sleep and the daytime symptoms caused by those sleep issues.
Symptoms are generally severe enough to affect a person’s work or school performance as well as their social or family life.

The impact on your day
When insomnia is severe or lasts a long time, it causes sleep deprivation.
A major concern with sleep deprivation is daytime sleepiness.
Symptoms include:
• Feeling tired, unwell or sleepy
• Delayed responses, such as reacting too slowly when you’re driving
• Impaired attention or memory
• Slowed thought processes or confusion
• Decreased motivation
• Mood disruptions, especially anxiety, depression and irritability
• Behavioural issues, like hyperactivity or aggressiveness, especially in children
• Increased accidents or mistakes
• Trouble with work, school, or social performance

The impact on your health
Sleep deprivation can also increase the risk of certain conditions:
• Depression
• Anxiety
• High blood pressure (hypertension)
• Heart attack
• Stroke
• Obstructive sleep apnoea
• Type 2 diabetes
• Obesity
• Conditions that involve psychosis

Benefits of Sleep
There are numerous benefits to a good nights sleep:
• Better memory and performance
• Lower weight gain risk
• Better calorie regulation
• Greater athletic performance
• Lower risk of heart disease
• More emotional and social intelligence
• Preventing depression
• Lower inflammation
• Stronger immune system
Healthy sleep also helps the body remain healthy and stave off diseases.
Without enough sleep, the brain cannot function properly.

67% of adults in the UK suffer from disrupted sleep
75% Of adults aged 65 and older experience symptoms of insomnia
16 million Adults in the UK suffer from sleepless nights with 31% saying they have insomnia
Prevalence of insomnia is 2 times higher in females than males

Talking therapy for insomnia
Cognitive behavioural therapy is an alternative treatment for insomnia (CBT-I or CBTI). It is a short, structured, and evidence-based approach to combating the frustrating symptoms of insomnia.
CBT-I focuses on exploring the connection between the way we think, the things we do, and how we sleep.
Treatment often takes from 6-8 sessions.
CBT-I helps people manage anxiety they feel about their sleep issues and establish better sleep habits.

Introducing Somnus
Somnus uses Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) to provide the following benefits:
- Reduce time to fall asleep (sleep latency)
- Reduce waking during the night (sleep disturbances)
- Increase total sleeping time
- Improve sleep quality
CES also has evidence in helping people who suffer from anxiety and depression.
Somnus has no severe side-effects, is prescription-free and can be used in the comfort of your own home at a time that suits you.
Somnus can provide results after just two weeks of daily use.

How CES works
CES is a neuromodulation technique used for treating several disorders.
The physiological, neurochemical and metabolic mechanisms underlying CES effects are debated.
When considering insomnia, anxiety and depression, it is believed CES works in the following ways.
• The brain has electrochemical signals, or brainwaves. When one’s brainwaves are not balanced properly, that individual may experience both emotional and neuro-physical health concerns.
CES can have a modulating effect and restore brainwaves to a balanced state.
• The use of low-intensity microcurrents to stimulate the brain may also cause the brain to secrete neurotransmitters and hormones involved in anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

How to Use
1. Connect the ear clips to the ends of the lead wire. Insert the lead wire into the lead wire socket on the device.
2. Clamp each ear clip onto your earlobes.
3. Turn the device on by holding the power button for 5 seconds.
4. Select the session time by pressing the time selection button on the side
of the device. The default session time will be set at 20 minutes. We recommend no more than 1 hour of stimulation per day.
5. Once time has been selected, start the session by pressing the power button.
6. Increase intensity by pressing the increase intensity button.
We recommend increasing the intensity slowly during first use. The stimulation should provide a slight tingling sensation in the earlobes.
7. Complete the session.
8. Turn off the device by holding the power button for 5 seconds

When to use
Somnus features ear clips which should be attached to the user’s earlobes and the device via the provided lead wires.
Sufferers of insomnia should use Somnus daily, for 20 minutes to hour.
Most people will experience the best results when applying the stimulation within three hours of going to sleep.
After improvement in sleep, we recommend reducing use to two or three times a week, ideally in the morning. This can be possible after two weeks.
A small percentage of people may find stimulation creates an alert state of mind, making it difficult to switch off. If so, these people should apply stimulation earlier in the day.
Somnus stimulation can also be applied when the user wakes during the night, to assist falling back to sleep.
